Sohar Industrial Estate is ideally located and with easy access, is sure to witness significant growth in investment.
Sohar Industrial Estate (SIE) covers an area of 21,674,348 sq m, of which, 10,730,000 sq m have been developed and subdivided into six phases. SIE was established in November 1992, and ideally located mid-way between Muscat (200 km) and Dubai, UAE (180 km). It has easy access domestically by well-established roads as well as international markets through Sohar Port. SIE is located close to Sohar Industrial Port, which contributes in facilitating the import and export processes to-and-from various countries worldwide. In addition, the estate´s location close to the GCC markets through a road network is also an advantage.
SIE is home to 269 businesses, 178 projects under production, 39 projects under construction, and a further 52 are expected to come on stream in the near future. Abdul Kadir Salim Al Balushi, Director General, Sohar Industrial Estate says, ´Sohar Industrial Estate continues its efforts to attract more investors during the coming period, by implementing a number of vital strategic projects aspiring at enhancing the quality of services provided to the investors. Among these projects, is the development of the seventh stage on an area touching 8.5 million sq m. A specialised company has been assigned to work on the implementation of this project, which shall take around 18 months. It is worth mentioning that the project includes the provision of infrastructure and all the necessary services.´
Master plan for the present and future
The estate's general and master plan prepared by a specialised consulting company is almost ready. To this, Al Balushi adds, ´The plan shall underline addressing various work aspects, and providing current and future required services. It also includes a facility building, which has been assigned to a specialised company to implement the project. Additionally, an integrated residential area will be established in the estate in coordination with a specialised company to provide a variety of services in line with the best international standards.´
Port of interest
On the estate´s doorstep is Sohar Port, a large three-phase project which began late-1999. The Daewoo Corporation completed the construction of a breakwater, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction executed the dredging and reclamation at the port. Turkey´s STFA Construction is building an 850-m-long quay. In time, the Port will boast cargo and container berths and two liquid cargo berths, to be used for oil, as well as a 260 m quay for the upcoming fertilizer plant. Moreover, there are plans to erect a fourth for the aluminum smelter project. The harbour will have a depth of 17 m, deep enough to accommodate fifth generation container vessels which are currently coming into service. Indeed, the Port has generated considerable international interest in Sohar Industrial Estate.
Production on the estate is of a wide range. ´The projects in Sohar Industrial Estate range between the food industry, construction, aluminum, plastic industries, oil and gas, iron and steel industries, and chemical industries, ´ says Al Balushi.
Given the economic growth witnessed by Al Batinah North Governorate in general and the Wilayat of Sohar in particular, which is realised in various fields related to the industrial sector, Sohar Industrial Estate is witnessing significant growth in investment through a line-up of existing projects in the estate. This comes as a result of the efforts undertaken by the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE), its adoption of investment ideas, and developing these ideas through factors that gear up the Omani economy.
