Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City Project

Brand building in any sector is imperative and relevant
Project Qatar 2015

Special Project  /  Apr 2015

Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City Project will assure best use of facilities and achieve highest quality standards for patients across the country.
The Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City (HBKMC) was initiated as a part of the Qatar National Vision 2030. The project, that was originally built as Atheleic´s Village for the 2006 Doha Asian Games, included three specialized hospitals and a research centre. Covering a total built-up area of 2.4 million sq ft, the building also includes a large basement area and a low level area for services. The QR 2.13 billion main contract for hospital development included construction of various buildings for Physiotherapy or Physical Medical and Re-Habilitation (PMR) Hospital, Gynecology and Women´s Hospital (WH), Minor Surgery or Ambulatory Hospital (AH), Translational Research Institute (TRI) and Bio-bank.

The PMR hospital consists of 40 beds for orthopedic and fractures sections, 40 beds for cardio vascular diseases, 40 beds for spinal cord injuries, 40 beds for fractures and brain injuries and 40 beds for children. WH hospital consists of 190 beds for women, 53 beds for intensive care unit and 48 beds for child incubation and 10 operation theatres.

And, AH hospital consists of 64 beds for patients, 52 beds for intensive care unit and 11 operation theatres, 20 pre-operation beds, which has the capacity to undertake more than 28,000 surgeries in a year.

MEP scope of works
Hospital projects are one of the most challenging projects and classified under critical projects category as they involve construction of facilities for saving human lives. Their design and installations have to be world-class, and to ensure this, Arabian MEP was appointed by the main contractor to execute the entire scope of mechanical systems including Heating Ventilation Air-conditioning (HVAC), public health systems including water supply and drainage, fire protection systems, fire hydrant, FM 200, Building Management System (BMS), steam system, LPG, fuel oil system and associated electrical works.

Arabian MEP installed over 3.2 million sq ft of high quality ducting (GI Ducts, MS Ducts, Antimicrobial Coated Ducts, SS Ducts) with various accessories such as volume control damper, motorised VCD, fire damper, motorised FD, motorised fire and smoke dampers, approx 132,000 ft of chilled water piping, copper piping, PPR piping, cast iron piping, HDPE piping, PPFR piping, condensate drain piping, fire fighting piping, etc.

A well experienced project team comprising 2,000 site installation technicians was deputed for the mechanical works. The entire team was spearheaded by Asst Gopa Kumar, Operations Manager and Rajesh, Senior Project Manager.

Arabian MEP was awarded the mechanical contract on June 2011. Due to improvement in project design and construction of additional energy centre building, the project took nearly four years to complete and is scheduled for handing over during July 2015.

State-of-the-art HVAC Duct factory
As site fabrication was not permitted by the clients, Arabian MEP within the first four months, established a large scale state-of-the-art HVAC Duct fabrication facility at Salwa Industrial area exclusively for the project.

The factory was provided with central air-conditioning system with positive pressurisation to create a dust-free environment. Epoxy coated shop floor and a separate area for special anti-microbial coating was also provided. Additionally, the factory was entrusted with the responsibility to pre-fabricate a complete air distribution system including insulation and ship it to the project site with protective wrap to avoid any damages during the transit.

Techniques and technology
Arabian MEP team work is the secret behind the success of HBKMC project. Best work practices were implemented and followed at site. Highly skilled and qualified technicians, supervisors and engineers were deployed for better efficiency and reduction of material wastage. High efficiency tools and tackles were used to reduce noise pollution and other environmental factors. Electrical winches were used for shifting of equipment.

Sustainability and safety
Sustainability is generally understood to mean something along the lines of not consuming resources faster than their production and not polluting the environment. This project does exactly that. It boasts of eco-friendly measures such as antimicrobial coating for ducts, addition of chemicals in chilled water system and adequate drainage system. Arabian MEP also maintained excellent safety HSE standards and was awarded with trophies for the development.
