Manuel Sea Master Ortega, CEO, Abengoa, is a proud man. His company, along with Advanced Water Technology (AWT), will jointly develop what is touted to be the world´s first large-scale solar desalination plant in Saudi Arabia. The photovoltaic plant will produce 60,000 cu m of water a day to supply Al Khafji City in North Eastern Saudi Arabia, thus ensuring a constant water supply all year round. It will also have a system to optimise power consumption and a pre-treatment phase to reduce the high level of salinity and the oils and fats that are present in the region´s seawater. With this project, Abengoa´s total desalination capacity will increase to nearly 1,500,000 cu m per day, enough to supply 8.5 million people around the world. Ortega, who has always ensured the company posts good numbers, has yet another success story in the making.
