With meeting rooms designed like a spaceship and walls clad in industrial carpet, this office in Moscow designed by Za Bor Architects uses an industrial theme and bold colours to add funk to the design.
Designing an office for Yandex, the largest IT company in Russia, came with both challenges and perks for the Russian architectural firm, Za Bor. Za Bor specialises in designing creative spaces for IT companies. After designing 21 Yandex offices in 12 cities spread over four countries, the architects team had developed an understanding of exactly what their clients needs were. However, accommodating all these needs was not always easy - especially in this case, where the office was located in a reconstructed building full of columns and inter-storey premises.
A happy office space is what the client wanted this workplace to look like, but the complex construction elements, level differences in the building - the ceiling height varies from 2 to 6 meters - balconies, and beams that were left back by the previous tenants posed serious challenges at the designing stage itself. To harmonise the discordant elements and camouflage the awkward ones, Za Bor has used colours, fluid forms and a striking flooring as the standout elements in the design.
The first three floors of the office are connected with a generic element that is intended to form a giant ribbon that, while penetrating floors, forms streamlined volumes of meeting and conference rooms. The open communication lines on the ceiling, unique ceiling lights in complex geometrical boxes, and compound flowerpots with flowers dragging on to the ceiling are common to all the Yandex offices Za Bor has designed.
Alcove sofas by Vitra lend a splash of colour at regular intervals and provide seating for informal meetings. Industrial carpet is used for the wall finishing along with marker coverings and cork board. The flooring is fluid and varied.
The fourth and fifth floors are constructed in a totally different style. Here you see large Za Bor signature meeting rooms housed in colourful pods that resemble spaceships. Bright and perky, employees affectionately call these meetings rooms orange and tomato, in reference to their colours. Other than this, the interiors are mostly in neutral grey and completed with Herman Miller systems. The office is also equipped with a cafeteria and game room with a sports corner.
All in all, the makeover that Za Bors architects have given to a difficult space speaks volumes about their deftness in getting around structural challenges.
