The planned Batinah Coastal Road (BCR) starts from Naseem garden, Barka, and extends up to Khatmat Malaha, covering a length of about 241 km.
The existing Batinah Highway is the only major East-West road corridor connecting the Muscat Capital area with the border post of Khatmat-Malaha and serving the Batinah region. Keeping in view the current and future economic development manifested through industrial zones, fishing ports, integrated residential and commercial developments, tourism areas, etc, an alternative road much closer to the coast was planned.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) envisaged the Batinah Coastal Road (BCR), mostly along the sea, starting from Naseem Garden, Barka, and extending up to Khatmat Malaha, covering a length of about 241 km. And, Nagarjuna Construction Company International LLC (NCC International) in the Sultanate of Oman bagged the award for the construction of the Al Batinah Coastal Road (Phase-I).
The present scope of work pertains to the last section of the Batinah Coastal Road as: Section II - Sohar Port to Khatmat Malaha (176 + 000 km to 241 + 700 km). The starting point of the BCR is located about 700 m from the existing Naseem Garden roundabout towards Sohar, whereas the end point is about 1 km short of Khatmat Malah border post.
The project is designed as an all-weather four-lane dual carriageway with two-lane service roads on landward, seaward or both sides, depending on the proximity to the sea, built-up area and other considerations and limitations. The service roads have been integrated with the existing road network wherever feasible.
Original scope of work
The types of work executed include, but were not limited to the following:
The main carriageway shall have 2 x 7.3 m wide travel lanes, 2.5 m wide outer shoulders, 1.2 m wide inner shoulders and 10.3 m wide median.
The service road shall be 6.5 m wide with 2.5 m asphalted shoulders on both sides. It is evident the Batinah Coastal Road will provide strategic and economic development to the region.
