By championing a cause that most directly affects the development of Qatar, Prime Minister and Interior Minister HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani has hit the bull´s eye. The cause in question is the burgeoning water problem of the desert state. The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of the QR17 bn Strategic Mega Reservoirs Project to secure water supplies in Qatar. Spread across five different sites, the project comprises 24 mega reservoirs, making the project the largest one in the world. The well-planned project will work in conjunction with Khahramaa in a bid to increase Qatar´s strategic water storage and to help resolve the water crisis. The project plans to link the key desalination plants together at the five specific reservoirs sites with the installation of 650 km pipelines. The five sites include Um Baraka, Um Salal, Rawdat Rashid, Abu Nakhla and Al Thumama. The total cost of contracts for this project is estimated at QR 17 billion.
